Introduction to the digital reality of music

- Part of 'A topology of musical encounter' (summary) -

“In revelation the angel predicts there will be no more time. It is written explicitly and clearly. When every human is happy there will be no more time because she is not needed anymore. Time is left nowhere. She is not a thing, but an idea. She will extinguish in the mind.”
                  - Fjodor Dostojevski – Evil Spirits

It can be considered a general agreement that music consists of sound. This means it has a frequency in time and a volume in space. So we know that music exists within the same physical reality as our bodies.  But the enormous amount of music we hear daily is nowadays only a translation into sound, while the music exists as strings of 0 and 1 in the digital reality. After it has taken the shape of sound, it is transformed into music again in the personal reality of the listener. The actuality of the sound in space and time functions as medium between the digital and the personal.

Our daily experience has become increasingly dependent on this unlimited access to streaming digital information and communication through the ether. There is a growing interest to facilitate encounter, organisation and even complete means of living within the digital space. The last decades a worldwide movement into new digital homes has taken place. Therewith we became owners of a worldwide citizenship, pursuing our dreams and happiness unbound to physical borders. We move towards an existence in the digital reality, where space and time have vanished.

Paradoxically, the desire to connect this global experience to our local physical surrounding has become more urgent. Just as our need to translate digits back to sound, we seek reflection of our new social surrounding in the digital space in the earth, air and bodies around us. A next positive and progressive development in the digital space therefore focuses on mediating a closer collaboration between the possibilities of the digital and the physical. Therefore I investigate those possibilities of the digital surrounding that help establish connections and ideas that will lead to innovative musical developments in physical existence. The digital space functions as medium between the personal experience and physical reality of sound.
