- Part of 'A topology of musical encounter' (summary) -
The fundament of a sustainable and high quality network between musicians we intend to build, is a virtual representation of the musicians in the digital space. Let’s not regard this digital interface as anything less than the looks of our figures in physical space. It is merely the façade of a complex and refined interior, but nevertheless a most essential general shape that requires a specific content. For musicians a profile should consist of the representation of generalistics, like personal data, main musical activities, a musical ‘motto’ and a sound. Equal to our desire in ‘real life’ the choices in our outer representation could change with every moment and occasion. A profile should therefore be dynamic. A dynamic digital format means the person behind the profile has access to change their digital looks according to the actuality – another sound, another motto, an emphasis on other activities, maybe even another name.
Underneath this representation there is a pathway to the interior musical personality. Every profile forms the entrance to a small personal library that represents a unique musical consciousness. Musicians are asked to react on sound fragments that represent their essential musical materials. These fragments lead to considerations about the choices one makes in the musical creative process, personal anecdotes and opinions on music and musicianship and further elaboration about surrounding between music, musician and listeners. We call these separate individualistics of digital musical identity ITEMS. They are a collection of embedded digital objects which allow text, visual, sound and video formats to be used and combined to represent a characteristic of the musician.
In the digital reality exist a numerous amount of platforms where musicians represent themselves with a profile and items, to get to know and be known by others. Many musicians exist in several of these environments, in every one of them their profile looks a bit different. In every surrounding we ‘dress’ diverse and the space itself sheds a different ‘light’ upon our looks. Since we are intending to form a new platform, it is essential to create new profiles for those who will participate in a network for new musical development in Amsterdam. Technically this means creating a digital location for every unique profile. Furthermore these profiles and items are embedded on the web by a list of hits. These are strong simplifications of individualistics - a whole idea or musical expression is brought back to one word. We have created the digital individual musician that now can start to lead his own life in the digital reality.
