- Part of 'A topology of musical encounter' (summary) -
Preface
AMSTERDAM E@RPORT is a platform for the latest musical developments in Amsterdam. A daily stream of sounds, musicians and listeners cross each other’s paths and then take off for extensive travelling through the different musical world that Amsterdam encloses. We offer ongoing musical flights departing from Amsterdam with arrivals in unknown musical territories worldwide. From september 2008 AMSTERDAM E@RPORT intends to develop with its own musical laboratory, a virtual concerthall and an online community space for musicians in Amsterdam and listeners worldwide.
In the concerthalls within the new architecture of the Conservatory of Amsterdam, monthly encounters between musicians and listeners take place. At the same time these concerts – the musicians, the sounds, the listeners the performance space – lead a second virtual life in the ether. While some meet, listen and discuss within the limitations of physical time and space, others listen, meet, discuss and experience the event at flexible places and alternating moments.
In these writings I provide insight in the philosofical considerations, social developments and musical ideals behind the construction of AMSTERDAM E@RPORT. Together we overview the necessary translations from a musical intention to available public formats in the digital sphere, how developments in society influence the personal and collective experience of music and which artistic questions come to the surface in the pursuit of an innovative musical exchange between various musicians.
